Most women over 35 will eventually deal with a hormone imbalance, which can cause you to feel flat and tired. However, bio identical hormones are offering hope to women wanting to regain control of their health.

Actress Suzanne Somers has been singing praises of the wonders of bio identical hormones for more than a decade. Suzanne says menopause almost ruined her life. “It was like a Mack truck,” she says. “It began a three-year odyssey of not sleeping, moodiness, weight gain, changes in my hair, changes in my skin, body itches and rashes.”

Suzanne says bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) saved her. “By replacing my hormones with bio identical hormones, I got my life back. I got my health back, I got my figure back, I got my happiness back,” she says. “Everything in my life is better.”

At Atlas Drug and Nutrition, we believe BHRT can help you take back your life. We’d like to share some frequently asked questions we receive from patients – helping you decide if BHRT is a treatment option for you.

  • What does BHRT stand for?
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Bio identical hormones match the molecular structure of hormones your own body produces. BHRT uses supplemental doses of hormones sharing chemical structure identical to the hormones the human body naturally produces.
  • What does BHRT treat?
BHRT treats the symptoms of menopause, perimenopause and postmenopause.
  • Where are BHRT treatments available?
When bio identical hormones are purchased at a compounding pharmacy, BHRT are uniquely tailored for each individual patient. If they’re purchased at a conventional pharmacy, these hormones are limited to a range of set doses. In both instances, the prescriptions are based on a series of tests performed by a physician.
  • Is there a difference between BHRT and HRT?
Yes. While BHRTshares chemical structures identical to the hormones your body produces, HRT chemical structures differ from those produced in the human body. The most widely prescribed form of HRT (hormone replacement treatment) is extracted from horse urine (makes you think twice about putting that pill in your mouth). The differing chemical structure could explain why horse-hormone HRT has been linked to various health problems – including heart disease. With this is mind, it doesn’t make sense to me to prescribe horse-hormone HRT to women I work with. I prefer to use identical-to-human (bio-identical) hormones, avoiding potential long-term dangers.
  • How is BHRT taken?
Bio identical hormones can be applied as a cream, a suppository, orally or injected.
