Adrenal fatigue. You’ve heard of it, right? It seems to be the new buzz term in health care circles. So what’s the deal? Is it just another health fad, or is it a topic that deserves your attention? Are your nagging symptoms simply the result of a hectic lifestyle, or could you be one of the many victims suffering from taxed adrenals?
Sick and Tired? Understanding Adrenal Fatigue
Do you find yourself exhausted all the time? Do you blame it on the the kids, the job, or your never ending to-do list? Do you find yourself relying on coffee? Boy, do you drink coffee – in addition to your energy drinks and sugary, sure-to-fire-you-up snacks. Of course, none of these things actually work, at least not long term. Do you collapse in to bed at night, but in spite of the exhaustion, find your mind racing, and you can’t catch a wink of sleep?
If this sounds familiar, you may be a victim of adrenal fatigue.
What Is Adrenal Fatigue?
Your adrenal glands are responsible for supplying the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol helps in stressful situations. For instance, if our ancestors were chased by a predator, our body’s fight-or-flight mode (cortisol), would be activated. During this stress response, cortisol would be released to regulate blood pressure and blood sugar – necessary for stressful events.
When things calm down, cortisol secretion decreases, along with your blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Unlike acute stress, chronic stress turns on the fight-or-flight response, and it doesn’t turn off. The result? Your body produces initially too much cortisol and if the stress is not abated, the adrenals get burned out and cortisol gets depleted. That is adrenal fatigue.
